Welcome to a one-day introductory raku course in my studio, located in the idyllic countryside just outside Vingåker.

This course is intended for anyone who is curious about raku and has not tried it before.

During the day, we will explore two techniques:

- Raku reduction
Glaze firing with reduction, creating beautiful glazes with colour variations and copper tones in different shades.

- Black and white
Glaze firing featuring the characteristic black crackle patterns in contrast with the white glaze.

Please bring 2–3 pieces so that we can choose which ones are most suitable. Maximum size: 20 × 20 × 20 cm.

You are welcome to use K129-N stoneware clay or a similar durable white stoneware clay containing at least 30% grog.

The walls of your pieces must not be thicker than 1 cm. If you are making a sculpture, make sure it has an opening so that heat can easily enter and escape.

Please note that pieces that are too thick or uneven cannot be fired. They may break or explode in the hot kiln.

The course will be held in Liv Sandberg’s raku studio.

Parking is available.

There is a bus stop directly outside the studio.

Vingåker has good train connections.

Refreshments are included in the course fee.

At the end of the course, we will tidy up together before concluding with a review of the pieces created and fired during the day.

Welcome to a one-day course packed with blazing fire, intense heat, raku and alternative firing techniques.

During this intensive day, we will explore:

- Raku reduction
Glaze firing with reduction, creating beautiful glazes with colour variations and shimmering copper tones in different shades.

- Black and white
Glaze firing featuring the characteristic black crackle patterns in contrast with the white glaze.

- Naked raku – Peel Off
This technique uses two layers before firing: first, a layer consisting of kaolin and quartz, followed by a layer of glaze. When the crackled outer shell is removed after firing, the black crackle patterns remain imprinted on the unglazed ceramic surface.

- Obvara
An incredibly beautiful technique in which the piece is dipped into a fermented mixture.

- Smoke – horsehair
An exciting technique in which we decorate using a variety of materials, such as hair, feathers and other organic materials. These are burned onto the heated ceramic surface to create patterns.

Please bring 6–10 pieces.

Maximum size: 20 × 20 × 20 cm. At least four of the pieces should be thoroughly burnished, so that we can select the ones best suited to the different techniques.

You are welcome to use K129-N stoneware clay or a similar durable white stoneware clay containing at least 25–30% grog.

The walls of your pieces must not be thicker than 1 cm.

If you are making a sculpture, make sure it has an opening so that heat can easily enter and escape. This helps prevent explosions caused by the thermal shock the pieces are exposed to during the rapid firing and even faster cooling process.

Hollow out your pieces so that the walls are no thicker than 1 cm.

Please note that pieces that are too thick or uneven cannot be fired. They may break or even explode in the hot kiln and damage other participants’ pieces.

Please be aware that burnishing with a spoon can leave marks. Instead, use a stone, glass or plastic tool when burnishing.

If you have experience using Terra Sigillata, you are welcome to use it on the pieces that are to be burnished, but this is not a requirement.

What to bring in addition to your ceramic pieces

Bring a hat or something made of wool or cotton to cover your hair.

Bring suitable heat-resistant gloves.

Wear clothing made of wool or cotton to protect your body from the intense heat near the kilns and when pieces are removed from them. Synthetic materials can melt easily.

Most importantly, wear one or two layers of long-sleeved tops to protect your arms.

If you have a respirator mask, preferably one fitted with gas filters, please bring it.

There will be a few spare pairs of gloves and respirator masks available to share if you forget yours or do not have your own.

You should also dress appropriately for the weather. If it rains, we may get wet. If the sun is shining, it can become very hot.

A change of clothes and a water bottle are therefore recommended.

The course includes a booklet containing information about the techniques covered during the day, along with basic recipes.

Please bring whatever you prefer to use for taking notes, as I will provide a great deal of information verbally and answer questions throughout the day.

At the end of the course, we will tidy up together before concluding with a review of the pieces fired during the day.

During these two intensive days, we will cover:

An exciting matte, copper-based glaze that can create colour variations in pink, purple, green, blue and yellow.

- Saggar.

Here, we make foil saggars prepared with different oxides and minerals. The packages are placed in a wood- and sawdust-fired kiln, which we then light.

Please bring 8–14 pieces.

Maximum size: 20x20x20 cm, at least 6 of which should be thoroughly burnished. (This allows us to select the pieces that are best suited).

You are welcome to use K129-N stoneware clay or a similar durable white stoneware clay. At least 25–30% grog.
